Manchester City ready to launch sensational bid to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid this summer

Abu Dhabi powerbrokers willing to match £80 million world-record transfer fee and sanction salary of between £400,000-a-week and £500,000-a-week to land Portuguese icon

Sources in both Manchester and Spain have told Goal.com that there has been contact between intermediaries in recent weeks to gauge the player’s interest in returning to Manchester and the early indications from the 27-year-old's camp is that he could be open to a transfer that would send shockwaves through football.

Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes has become increasingly close to senior City officials over the past year.

It is understood that Abu Dhabi go-betweens floated the idea to Ronaldo last summer but the feedback from the player was that it was not the right time.

"The signs now from the Ronaldo camp are surprisingly more positive," a source close to the situation told Goal.com. "The contact has taken place in the last few weeks and there is serious chatter in the corridors at the Etihad, akin to when City tried to sign Kaka from AC Milan a few years back."

Owner Sheikh Mansour, advised by the club’s senior hierarchy in Abu Dhabi, is a huge admirer of Ronaldo and has tremendous respect for Real Madrid as a footballing institution.

Although City strongly refuted on Friday that the club have made any move to sign the forward, it is understood that the billionaire owner is ready to sanction the monies if there is a deal to be done.

“City want a marquee signing this summer to confirm their emergence as serious players among football’s elite,” the source added. “Ideally, they would do so from a position of strength as Premier League champions but whatever happens in the title race they want to send out a statement of intent.

“Ronaldo is the one they have wanted for a long time. They know they will not get Lionel Messi.”

Three years on from the failed attempt to sign Kaka from AC Milan in a world record €108m deal (worth £90m at current exchange rates), the Sheikh’s advisers are confident that the club’s growth on and off the pitch will enable them to hold firm in their dealings with the nine-time European champions.

City’s powerbrokers are also confident that the staggering sums required to entice Ronaldo to Etihad Stadium would not contravene Uefa’s financial fair play regulations, which the club are fully-committed to satisfying.

Sheikh Mansour would off-set the cost of signing Ronaldo and at least one other marquee summer signing – with Napoli’s Edinson Cavani the leading centre-forward target - by sanctioning a summer clear-out of big earners who are not central to manager Roberto Mancini’s long-term plans.

The club will listen to offers for Carlos Tevez, who earns £198,000-a-week, Edin Dzeko, who gets £130,000-a-week, Nigel De Jong, who is on £85,000-a-week. On-loan trio Emmanuel Adebayor (£170,000-a-week), Wayne Bridge and Roque Santa Cruz (who both earn £90,000-a-week) can also leave.

City are likely to encounter difficulties in shifting them from the wage bill but if they do so it would free up nearly £800,000-a-week, equivalent to an eye-watering £38m per annum, around a quarter of the Premier League record £174m salary bill revealed in the club’s 2010-11 financial accounts.

Ronaldo’s six-year Real contract, which runs until 2015, was initially worth £250,000-a-week but has built-in incremental rises which will swell the figure to around £400,000-a-week in the final year of the deal.

Such is the Portuguese’s vast marketing potential, built around the CR7 brand, City are confident they would be able to recoup much of their outlay through shirt sales, merchandise tie-ups and other commercial spin-offs.

The parameters of the deal would be quite similar to the offer made to Kaka in 2009, with City believed to be prepared to fund a series of soccer schools in Ronaldo’s name in a bid to demonstrate their commitment to the player and push his brand.

Big win: Fernando Llorente starred in Athletic Bilbao's comeback

Europa League round-up: Bilbao come from behind to stun Raul inspired Schalke

Big win: Fernando Llorente starred in Athletic Bilbao's comebackFresh from mauling Manchester United, Marcelo Bielsa's Athletic Bilbao took a giant stride towards the UEFA Europa League semi-finals with a dramatic 4-2 first leg win at Schalke 04.
Fernando Llorente scored twice as Bilbao came from behind to grab their crucial advantage, which they boosted in injury time when Iker Muniain scored his side's fourth.
Llorente put the visitors ahead on 20 minutes at the Veltins-Arena but Schalke hit back with two goals from Raul either side of the break to nudge the German side in front.
But Bilbao, without a win in three since seeing off Sir Alex Ferguson's men, responded through Llorente again and an 81st minute goal from Oscar De Marcos before Muniain added to their lead.
Substitute Eduardo Salvio struck in the 89th minute as Atletico Madrid claimed a potentially crucial 2-1 first leg advantage in their quarter-final clash with Hannover in Spain.
The Germans looked to be heading home with a draw after Mame Biram Diouf equalised Radamel Falcao's early strike, but Salvio let fly from 20 yards to leave his side in command.
But it was not all good news for the Primera Liga as former UEFA Cup winners Valencia were beaten 2-1 away Dutch Eredivisie leaders AZ Alkmaar.

Brett Holman put the home side in front in first half injury time and although Mehmet Topal equalised in the 52nd minute, Maarten Martens hit what turned out to be AZ's winner with 11 minutes left.
Sporting Lisbon beat Metalist Kharkiv 2-1 in Portugal but can expect a much tougher second leg after the Ukrainians gave themselves hope with an injury-time penalty.
Sporting were cruising through second half goals from Marat Izmailov and Emiliano Insua, but Cleiton Xavier's spot-kick deep into added time will give Metalist plenty of hope.

erguson hits back at refereeing 'bias' claim, insisting: I'll get Keane back to tackle Vieira!

exchange with Manchester City and Patrick Vieira on Thursday over suggestions his team benefit from favourable refereeing decisions at Old Trafford.
Clearly warming to the challenge, Ferguson hinted that the comments of Vieira, City's football development executive, might be of interest to the FA and even joked about bringing the former Arsenal midfielder's old rival Roy Keane back to Manchester United.
Mind games: City are not the best team now, says Fergie

An angry Vieira insists he was misrepresented in a BBC interview, and FA sources said last night they are unlikely to take any action against him.

But a week after he irked Ferguson by suggesting that bringing Paul Scholes out of retirement was an act of desperation, the United boss smiled when asked if the 35-year-old was trying to drag him into a slanging match as the Barclays Premier League title race hots up.
'I'm trying to analyse that,' said Ferguson. 'I'm not sure. He's more or less saying all the refs have been wrong this season and you're not supposed to discuss referees.
'So he is a paid official, isn't he? I think he is, isn't he? Apparently, he's retracted that. I can bring Keane back if he wants, and make it interesting!'

Vieira's comments followed a controversial incident at Old Trafford on Monday night when referee Michael Oliver rejected a late penalty claim from Fulham for Michael Carrick's challenge on Danny Murphy as United won 1-0 to go three points clear of City at the top of the table.
Ferguson insisted refereeing decisions even themselves out over the course of a season, and pointed to the penalty harshly awarded against Rio Ferdinand for his challenge on Newcastle's Hatem Ben Arfa in November.
United get the breaks: Vieira penalty claims
The United boss had done his homework, claiming his side have been awarded an average of 'three-and-a-half penalties a year' during his time in charge.
He also tried to turn the tables on City by pointing out that Gareth Barry could have been penalised for his challenge on Stoke's Glenn Whelan at the weekend.
And he reminded his rivals that Mario Balotelli escaped a red card for his stamp on Scott Parker - the Italian received a retrospective ban - before scoring their winner from the penalty spot against Tottenham in January.
'We've had some terrible decisions at Old Trafford, like when Newcastle got a penalty kick,' said Ferguson.
Price of a stamp: Mario Balotelli catches the head of Tottenham's Scott Parker

'Tottenham could claim the same when Balotelli wasn't sent off and ended up scoring the winning goal. I think from the referee's position I could see why he didn't give one when Danny Murphy was brought down because the ball was moved to the angle as Michael Carrick challenged him.
'From that position it wasn't clear but it was a good claim.
'But then City could have had a penalty kick against them at Stoke, with Gareth Barry.
'Every club gets good breaks, they get bad breaks that even themselves out over a season and that will never change.
Prospering from a penalty: Balotelli remained on the pitch to score against Spurs

'Someone said to me years ago that United always get penalty kicks at Old Trafford. But you go back through the 25 years I've been here, it's only three-and-a-half a year or something like that.'
Ferguson also responded to Vieira's suggestion that City deserve to win the title because they have played the better football.
'They were playing great football in the first half of the season,' he said.
'We felt the brunt of it when they beat us 6-1. But a season lasts for a bit longer than three months.'
City can go top again by beating Sunderland at home on Saturday before United play at Blackburn on Monday night.

WE ARE BACK

Hot wheels: David Beckham is king of the road as he takes out his motorcycle before upgrading to the Rolls Royce Ghost

David Beckham got to spend some quality time with his big boys toys, yesterday, near his home in Beverly Hills, California.
The L.A Galaxy football star pushed the pedal to the metal when he rolled out two of his amazing vehicles from his expansive fleet.
The 36-year-old was first seen riding his vintage look motorcycle with effortless style as he zoomed around his neighbourhood on the impressive bike.

The typically stylish father-of-four was not dressed in leathers, and instead opted for his own cool vintage biker style.

David wore a green jacket which he teamed with a pair of dark cream trousers and brown boots.
He was also sporting a pair of tan coloured gloves and a battered black helmet which hid his face behind a visor.

The superstar had the bike specially made last year after seeing one similar that he liked in a magazine.
A spokesperson for David told MailOnline: 'The bike was made by The Garage Company and it is a custom built 93 Knucklehead.'
While it is unclear how much the bike cost it has been a labour of love and it has taken more than six months for the cycle to be made.
The British sporting legend didn't end his motor mad day there, and he was later seen driving his most recent acquisition, a Rolls Royce Ghost.

The former Manchester United star had the Rolls Royce made in England and shipped over to his Los Angeles home, where it sits with his other all black motors in an air conditioned garage.
It's no surprise David wanted to spend some time alone after his busy day earlier this week with his family.
The doting dad gave his wife, Victoria, a break on Monday afternoon when he took their two younger children shopping at a Beverly Hills mall.
David was accompanied by a female nanny as he perused the shops with six-year-old Cruz and eight-month-old Harper.
Pushing the his daughter's stylish buggy, David looked relaxed as he spent some quality time with two of his children.
Wearing a grey sweater with blue jeans and a dark green beany hat, he was dressed down for the day out.
He didn't waste any time adding to his footwear collection and was seen clutching a few shopping bags from Footlocker as the group stopped for a rest.
Young Cruz looked excited to be out shopping and was wearing a stripey football shirt with some black shorts.
The family nanny had also been treated to something and was spotted peeking in at Harper every now and then.

Yes, you must feel terrible about your figure! Rihanna steps out bra-less in JUST a blazer after revealing body insecurities

During a chat with Kate Garraway, Rihanna admitted that she feels 'fat' some days and confessed to wanting what 'other people have' at times.
However it appeared that she had regained some of her usual confidence by the time she set off for another interview this afternoon.
The 24-year-old left the BBC Radio One studios wearing a short brightly-patterned dress, with a plunging neckline which made it clear that she wasn't wearing a bra.

A high hemline and strappy heels showcased her slender legs.

Rihanna tweeted as she was on her way 'Scott mills, I'm almost there!!!!!'
Her appearance on the Scott Mills show was of a rather different tone to her earlier interview, as the star is currently promoting her new film, Battleship.

So perhaps the outfit change was a nod to the more upbeat tone of her afternoon engagement.
In fairness, Rihanna certainly has no reason to hide her stunning figure.
But the ensemble was slightly incongruous with her earlier remarks.

Just 24 hours after sizzling on a London hotel roof in a satin dress, the star revealed an almost bizarre claim that she isn't always full of the confidence she seems to ooze from every pore.
Despite the The Love The Way You Lie singer tweeting pictures of herself half-naked, posing topless and admitting she loves being naked - it turns out it really isn't as easy as it looks.

Kate Garraway was interviewing the sultry star and perhaps due to cutting remarks Rihanna, 24, made to a reporter just the day before, she stuck to safe topics and sprinkled a bucket load of compliments on her.
