Liverpool's free agent striker options: Michael Owen, Del Piero... Emile Heskey?
Potential free agent strikers for Liverpool: from risky to terrifying!
The biggest name being linked with Liverpool in recent days is former Anfield hero Michael Owen. The striker claimed he had several offers from European clubs in the transfer window but as of yet nothing has materialised, with Owen insisting he preferred to stay in the Premier League. A few days ago that looked unlikely, but with Liverpool looking desperate, the former Manchester United man suddenly finds himself in a powerful position. A return to Anfield would be a huge risk for both the club and the player; though Owen was one of the finest strikers around at his peak, a series of injuries, combined with his age and lack of football in recent seasons, mean the odds are stacked against a heroic return. Not to mention his lack of popularity on the Kop. The former number ten may want to think twice about re-writing history for the worse at his former club.

With his dribbling ability, pace and finishing in his youth, Owen would undoubtedly have flourished in Liverpool's current system, but what about today?

Name: Alessandro Del Piero
Age: 37
Last club: Juventus

Though age may be creeping up on Alessandro Del Piero, the veteran striker is still deemed classy enough for Celtic to consider bringing him in to aid their Champions League campaign this season. That hasn't materialised as of yet, and speculation suggested that Australian side Sydney FC had pipped the Scots to the post for the Italian's signature. The plot thickened recently when Del Piero's agent claimed the Aussies had jumped the gun however, so it seems he's still available should the right offer come in and could even be holding out for a move to a bigger club. Though critics will perhaps claim that the pace of the Premier League could be too much for the forward these days, his supporters will point out his goals against Lazio and Inter that helped Juventus win Serie A last season. If his class can overcome his age, the Italian could prove an inspired impact substitute for the Reds.

Scotland international striker James McFadden is without a club after ending a short spell at Everton last season. The enigmatic forward has shown flashes of brilliance throughout his career, yet countless managers have struggled to get the best out of him consistently. Injury has also taken its toll on the Scot, though last season he looked capable of keeping up with the pace of the Premier League during his part in Everton's 4-0 victory over Sunderland in April. Signing a former Everton man would be a risky move for Brendan Rodgers, particularly when it's someone as unpredictable as McFadden, but if he could coax out the genius inside the Scot he could reap the rewards.

Critics will point out that if James McFadden could do this every week then he wouldn't be a free agent in the first place...

The nightmare scenario for Liverpool. If a Michael Owen return to Anfield would be controversial, then an Emile Heskey return would be a sign of their embarrassing fall from grace. That being said, Heskey's best spell of his career came with his 22 goals in all competitions for Liverpool in the 2000/01 season, so could Anfield be the place to get the best out of the former England international? With Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool are attempting to look to the future, not the past, however, and if the whole point of signing a free agent is to add more goals, then moving for a man who specialises in missing them would be madness. Still, for the neutral it would be comedy gold...
